SACRAMENTO, Calif.--Senior Aurelio Jackson was named Co-National
Hitter of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers
Association it was announced today. Jackson also garnered Big West
Player of the Week honors.
The San Diego, Calif., native had an amazing week. Jackson opened the
week by stretching his consecutive on-base streak to 16 plate
appearances before he sacrificed on Friday. The four-year starter
ended the week 13-for-19 (.684) with four walks and was hit by four
pitches. He also stole five bases to raise his Big West-leading total
to 41. During the week he reached base in 22 of his 28 times to the
plate.
He opened his streak with two singles and two walks at Cal Poly on
April 29. He then added three hits and was hit twice against Hawai''i.
Jackson followed that effort with three hits, two intentional walks
and was hit once against No. 6 Stanford. The streak continued in his
first at-bat against UC Riverside where he was hit by a pitch. He
started a new streak on Saturday going 5-for-5 with a walk.
Jackson currently leads the team with a .355 batting average. Earlier
this season he became the school record holder in career hits,
at-bats, runs and stolen bases. His 41 stolen bases this season is
the largest total since Sacramento State moved to Division I in 1990.
This season, he has reached base in 54 of the team''s 55 games.
Jackson joins junior pitcher Jeff Groeger and freshman Chris Kinsey
as the only three players to be named Big Sky Player/Pitcher of the
Week this season.
