HOSKINS CLAIMS FIRST TEAM FRESHMAN ALL-AMERICA HONORS FROM BASEBALL AMERICA
7/5/2012
Hoskins (center) is the second freshman all-American in program history and first consensus choice.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State outfielder Rhys Hoskins became the first consensus first team freshman all-American in school history when Baseball America became the third media outlet to honor the Sacramento native.
The National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association also made Hoskins a first team freshman all-American on June 11 after he was a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America selection, as chosen by The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper on June 6. (The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper only selects one team.)
He was one of just five West Coast players to earn first team honors from Baseball America and the only one selected from the Western Athletic Conference. Hoskins' .353 batting average led all first team selections and his 53 RBIs were the second most.
Hoskins led the Hornets with a .353 batting average, 10 home runs, 44 runs and 53 RBIs.
The Jesuit HS graduate was also the WAC Freshman of the Year after ranking second in the league in batting average, second in slugging (.567), third in RBIs, third in home runs, sixth in runs, sixth in doubles (16) and first in total bases (122).
Hoskins posted a team-best 16-game hitting streak from March 17 to April 11 and also had a team-high on-base streak, getting on board in 27 straight games from March 17 to April 29. He led the team with 14 multi-RBI games (seven games with two RBIs, four with three, one with four and two with five) and tied with Andrew Ayers for second on the roster with 22 multi-hit games.
In addition to his exploits on the diamond, Hoskins shined in the classroom. The business administration major posted a 3.92 GPA in his first year on campus.
