CHUNG NAMED WAC HITTER OF THE WEEK

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - After hitting .529 in four games last week, senior catcher Derrick Chung has been named Verizon WAC Hitter of the Week, the league announced on Monday.
It's the fourth weekly WAC award this season for the Hornets but the first for hitter of the week. Sophomore RHP Tanner Mendonca, sophomore RHP Dallas Chadwick and freshman RHP Brennan Leitao have each won the Verizon WAC Pitcher of the Week award this season.
A senior from Cypress, Calif., Chung hit .529 with four runs scored, a double, a home run, five RBIs and two walks as the Hornets went 4-0 on the week with a win over Saint Mary’s and a three-game series sweep of Hawai‘i.
Tied 1-1 against the Gaels in the bottom of the 10th inning, Chung hit a sacrifice fly to center to drive in teammate Andrew Ayers from third for a walk-off win in the Hornets' first extra innings game of the year. Chung notched his second walk-off of the week with two outs in the bottom of the 12th inning in the series opener against Hawai‘i. Chung drove a single to left that scored Scotty Burcham from second for the game-winning run which sparked the Hornets to a sweep of the Rainbows.
Chung recorded a .765 slugging percentage with a .524 on-base percentage while starting all four games at catcher.
Sacramento State closes out the regular season this weekend with a three-game non-conference series against UNLV. The Hornets head to the WAC Tournament, which runs from May 23-27 at Hohokam Park in Mesa, Ariz., in two weeks.
