BASEBALL DOWNED BY CAL POLY, 4-3

4/29/2001

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Designated hitter Bryan Gant went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored and Nathan Choate tied a school record when recorded his seventh save of the year to lead Cal Poly to a 4-3 victory over Sacramento State Saturday afternoon at Baggett Stadium.

The Mustangs took a 2-0 lead through four innings with single runs in the third and fourth. Kevin Tillman had an RBI fielder's choice in the third. Gant added an RBI single with the bases loaded in the fourth to score Scott Sheldon.

The Hornets got both runs back in the sixth. Right fielder Mario Celillo homered to lead off the inning. Celillo's third shot of the year sailed over the left field wall. Center fielder Aurelio Jackson then singled two batters later, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. He scored on third baseman Carlos Morales' double to tie the game at two.

The Mustangs were able to retake the lead in the seventh. Gant had a one-out double and scored two batters later when Kevin Tillman had a hit up the middle. Hornet shortstop Tito Barba made a diving attempt at the ball, but his throw to first base was not in time. Cal Poly added insurance in the eighth when Gant drew a bases-loaded walk.

Tyler Fitch pitched seven innings of six-hit ball for his fifth win of the year (5-3). He allowed only two runs. Greg Bochy pitched a scoreless eighth.

Sacramento State starter Chris Kinsey went seven innings allowing four runs (three earned) in the loss (1-3).

The same two teams meet Sunday at Baggett Stadium for a 1 p.m. start to close the series.
