SACRAMENTO, Calif. – No. 25 ranked New Mexico State, the top-hitting and scoring team in the Western Athletic Conference, showcased its prodigious offense with 22 total runs on Saturday and the Sacramento State baseball team dropped both games to the Aggies in a doubleheader at John Smith Field.
The Hornets (17-18, 2-3 WAC) issued a season-high 11 walks in the first game plus seven more in the second contest, allowing the Aggies (27-9, 4-1 WAC) to score more runs (22) than they had hits (20) in the doubleheader.
Sacramento State and New Mexico State will meet in the final game of the WAC series at 1 p.m. on Sunday before playing a non-league game at 2 p.m. on Monday.
GAME ONE RECAP (L, 16-4)
After being held scoreless for the first two innings, the potent New Mexico State offense came to life in the middle frames. The Aggies scored twice in the third and two more in the fourth before unloading seven runs in the fifth and five more in the sixth.
New Mexico State shortstop Zach Voight hit a grand slam in the five run sixth en route to a game-high four hits and seven RBIs. Preseason WAC hitter of the year, catcher Zac Fisher, went 3-for-5 with a run and a RBI for the Aggies.
Freshman
Scotty Burcham had a team-high two hits for the Hornets and four other players had one hit each. Starting pitcher
Brennan Leitao (3-3), who entered the game with nine walks in 47.1 innings, gave up six free passes in four innings on Saturday. The freshman, and reigning WAC pitcher of the week, took the loss after allowing eight runs on eight hits in four innings.
Sacramento State freshman
Rhys Hoskins was limited to a walk, a flyout and two strikeouts to end his team-best 16-game hitting streak, the eighth longest in school history.

GAME TWO RECAP (L, 6-1)
New Mexico State carried over its offensive momentum into the second game of the doubleheader with a six-run first inning that was more than enough for starting pitcher Adam Mott (5-0), who earned the win after allowing just one run on three hits in seven innings.
The Aggies batted around the lineup in the first inning, scoring six runs on six hits against Sacramento State starting pitcher
Dallas Chadwick.
After Chadwick (3-2) was pulled following the second inning, Sacramento State relievers
Brandon Creel (five innings) and

Sacramento State did score once in the seventh inning on junior
Clay Cederquist’s RBI single, but the Hornets were held without a hit in seven of the nine innings.
