UC SANTA BARBARA DEFEATS BASEBALL, 9-7, IN 10 INNINGS

4/22/2001

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara's Mike Kolbach and Chad Peshke

each drove home a run in the 10th inning to lift the Gauchos to a 9-7

come-from-behind win over Sacramento State Sunday afternoon at Hornet

Field.

The win improved UCSB to 29-11 overall and 4-2 in the Big West

Conference. It also gave the team a 2-1 win in the three-game series.

The Hornets fell to 18-25 overall and 2-7 in league games.

Leading 7-5 heading into the eighth inning, Sacramento State ran into

trouble. After retiring the first batter, starter Jeff Groeger

surrendered a single to Ryan Stringham. Groeger then got pinch hitter

Donovan Warrecker to fly out to center for the second out of the

inning. Ryan Spilborghs followed with a single and Schumaker singled

to right scoring Stringham. Sophomore Steve Cuckovich entered in

relief but walked Kolbach to load the bases. After throwing two balls

to Peshke, Cuckovich was lifted in place of Michael Penbera. Penbera

battled Dave Molidor to a full count but missed inside to score the

tying run.

In the 10th, Spilborghs singled to right with one out. Schumaker

walked and Kolbach then singled to right scoring Spilborghs and

giving the team a one-run lead. Peshke followed with a chopper to

short and beat out the double-play attempt at first base which

allowed Schumaker to score from third.

Jamie Gonzales threw the final 2.2 innings to earn his first win of

the year. Penbera dropped to 0-2 and allowed just his second and

third earned runs of the season in 19.0 innings.

Sacramento State jumped to an early lead in the game behind an RBI

double by Joe Evans in the first and three runs in the second on five

hits. The Hornets led 5-2 after four inning and appeared to get out

of a jam in the fifth but Carlo Morales mishandled a ball a third

base allowing the inning to continue. Stringham hit the next pitch

over the left-center field fence to tie the game, 5-5.

Sacramento State retook the lead in the seventh inning when Daryl

Grant and Chris Kinsey perfected a delayed double steal. Kinsey, who

was on first, purposely got caught between first and second while

Grant beat the throw to the plate. Kinsey later scored on a double by

Seth Atchue.

The Hornets continue their homestand on Tuesday against Santa Clara.

First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
