LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Sacramento State baseball team lost the series finale at No. 24 UCLA, 11-2, on Sunday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
The Hornets (4-7) were swept in the series by the Bruins (8-3) and scored just two runs in each game. Sacramento State scored two runs on four hits with two errors while UCLA tallied 11 runs on 11 hits and two errors.
The Bruins held the Hornets scoreless in all but the fourth inning. Sacramento State was down, 3-0, entering the top of the inning when freshman Rhys Hoskins led off with a single, the Hornets' first hit of the day, and moved to third on Will Soto's second ground rule double of the season. Trevor Paine grounded out to short to score Hoskins and, after a flyout, David Del Grande singled in Soto from second.
Sacramento State was down just one run, 3-2, entering the bottom of the fourth inning but UCLA responded with three runs in the fourth, one run in the fifth and four more in the sixth.
UCLA starter Zack Weiss (1-1) earned the win after allowing two runs on just four hits in seven innings with four strikeouts and three walks. The Bruins were led offensively by right fielder Jeff Gelalich, who went 3-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs.
Sacramento State starter Zach Morgan (0-2) suffered the loss after giving up one run on two hits in two innings with two strikeouts and two walks.
The Hornets have two days off before hosting Creighton at 2 p.m. on Wednesday. Sacramento State is at UC Riverside for a three-game series next weekend.
