UC SANTA BARBARA CRUISES IN GAME ONE, BASEBALL BOUNCES BACK FOR SPLIT

4/21/2001

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara''s Jared Schumaker and Mike Kolbach combined to go 9-for-9 with seven runs scored in game one and Sacramento State freshman Chris Kinsey pitched seven strong innings in game two as the two schools split a Big West Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Hornet Field. UCSB won the first game, 13-6. Sacramento State claimed the second, 4-2.

The Hornets are now 18-24 overall and 2-6 in Big West games. The Gauchos moved to 28-11 overall and 3-2 in the conference.

UCSB cruised through the first game scoring three runs in the first, four in the second, and two in the third to take a 9-1 lead. That lead proved to be plenty for James Garcia who improved to 7-1 on the ear with the win. The junior threw 8.0 innings and struck out five while allowing only two earned runs.

Five Gauchos recorded at least two hits as the team went 17-for-44. Schumaker and Kolbach, who bat first and second in the lineup, respectively, also drove in a combined four runs.

Senior Mike Miranda was dealt the loss for the Hornets. The Stockton, Calif., native lasted just 1.1 innings and was tagged for six hits and seven runs (three earned). Four Sacramento State players had two hits, including Aurelio Jackson who raised his league-leading stolen base total to 33.

In the second game, the Hornets scored two runs in the first inning behind an RBI-double by Daryl Grant and a single by Joe Evans. Neither team posted a another run until the fourth when UCSB tied the contest on a balk and a single by Ryan Stringham. The score held until the seventh inning where Sacramento State received three two-out hits scoring two runs.

Kinsey, who had never pitched more than 4.1 innings, threw into the eighth before giving way to Steve Cuckovich. Michael Penbera then entered in the ninth to notch his ninth save of the year. Kinsey (1-2) earned his first collegiate victory by striking out eight and allowing eight hits and two runs.

Grant paced the Hornet offense with a pair of hits including his 11th double of the year. UCSB was led by Chad Peshke and Ryan Spilborghs who each finished with a pair of hits.
