SACRAMENTO, Calif. - JaRell McIntyre hit a three-run home run in the
fifth inning to tie the game and singled in the go-ahead run in the
seventh to lift the University of Nevada to a 9-6 win over Sacramento
State Tuesday afternoon at Hornet Field.
The win improved the Wolf Pack to 22-19 overall. The Hornets dropped
to 17-23 and have now lost 13 of their past 15 games.
Nevada scored the game's first run when second baseman Matt Maguire
hit an opposite-field home run. Maguire, however, paid the price in
his next at-bat when he was hit with a pitch in his back. Nevada
responded in the next half inning by striking leadoff hitter Aurelio
Jackson which resulted in both benches emptying and a lot of talking.
After order was restored, Tim Maghan put Sacramento State ahead with
the first of his two home runs of the day. The Wolf Pack tied the
score in the fourth on a single by Alex Rangel which scored McIntyre.
The Hornets then broke the tie in the bottom half of the inning,
scoring four runs. The first run scored on a botched pickoff attempt
which plated Chris Kinsey. Jackson then drove home Cory Williams with
a sacrifice fly and Maghan added the final touch with his second
two-run shot of the day.
Starter Jeff Groeger opened the fifth inning by retiring the first
two batters but then ran into trouble. The junior allowed a solo home
run by Chris Dickerson and a single to Mike Gillies before walking Bo
Bryant. McIntyre then hit the first pitch offered to him over the
left field fence to tie the game. Nevada surged ahead in the seventh
on a single by McIntyre and added two more runs in the ninth on a
two-out error by Williams.
Maghan became the first Hornet to hit two home runs in a game since
Daniel Harkness hit a pair against Cal State Fullerton on March 20,
1999. The Keizer, Ore., native ended the day 2-for-5 with four RBI.
Freshman Chris Kinsey was the other bright spot in the Sacramento
State lineup going 3-for-4.
McIntyre completed the game 4-for-5 with four RBI and a pair of runs
scored. Maguire and Gillies each added two hits.
Sacramento State returns to Hornet Field on Friday to host UC Santa
Barbara. The game, which is the first of a three-game Big West
series, will start at 2 p.m.
