WOMEN’S SOCCER TEAM HAS SEVEN PLAYERS EARN ALL-BIG SKY HONORS; SHREVE NAMED TO FIRST TEAM 11/3/2009 OGDEN, Utah - The Sacramento State women’s soccer team had seven players earn all-Big Sky Conference honors, with junior Cori Shreve being named to the conference’s first team, as announced today. Shreve, a native of Pleasanton, tied for the team’s lead in points with eight, ranked second on the team in goals with three, and placed third on the team in assists with two, from the defensive midfield position. The team’s go-to player on set pieces and corner kicks, the 5-foot-8 Shreve led the team with 34 shots, and put 11 on goal during the year. She scored the game-winning goal in the Hornets 2-0 victory at Fresno State on Sept. 27. Shreve earned honorable mention all-Big Sky honors a season ago. The Hornet defense was well represented on the conference’s second team, with three defenders and a goalkeeper earning the honor. Sophomore Shea Roberts, and seniors Katelin Hopping and Christina Trenton anchored a backline that set a school record for goals against average for the third consecutive year, allowing just 0.68 goals per game. Roberts, a transfer from UC Irvine who hails from Folsom, Calif., made the most of her first season in the Green and Gold, starting all 18 matches while posting a goal and an assist. Hopping, a native of Livermore, Calif., made 17 starts during her senior season, and collected a goal off of a free kick against Idaho State on Oct. 25. Trenton concludes her career at Sacramento State as a three time all-conference honoree, having previously earned honorable mention accolades as a sophomore and junior. A native of San Juan Capistrano, Calif., Trenton started all 18 matches for the Hornets. Sophomore netminder Savannah Abercrombie was also recognized on the second team, following a season which saw her shatter the school’s record for career shutouts with 16. The Sacramento native also posted a goals against average of 0.70, which ranks 40th in nation. Two Hornets were pegged to the honorable mention team, senior forward Kim Kemper and freshman defender/forward Kelsey O’Donnell. Kemper, a native of Orangevale, Calif., had earned first team all-Big Sky honors the previous two seasons, but found herself a marked woman during her senior campaign, posting a career low one goal, along with three assists. She concludes her career ranking fifth in school history with 43 career points. O’Donnell had a strong first season in the Green and Gold, playing both defender and forward, while posting a team-high four goals. A native of El Dorado Hills, Calif., O’Donnell posted one of the biggest goals in Hornet history against Cal on Oct. 2, giving Sacramento State a 1-0 victory over No. 10 ranked Cal. Conference regular season champion Portland State swept the offensive and defensive MVP awards, with senior Dolly Enneking taking home the offensive award and senior goalkeeper Cris Lewis earning defensive MVP honors. Idaho State’s Ashley Jones was tabbed as newcomer of the year. The coach of the year award will be announced following the conference tournament, which will be held this weekend in Portland.
