SACRAMENTO --
Savannah Wahl pitched five strong innings, and
Carley Morfey's grand slam highlighted a six-run fifth inning, as the Hornets defeated Pacific, 7-2, on Saturday afternoon at Shea Stadium.
Today was the third day of the NorCal Kickoff - a four-day, seven-team tournament Sacramento State is co-hosting with UC Davis. The Hornets improved to 2-1 at the season-opening event, and will play twice more tomorrow against Rutgers at 9:30 a.m. and Seattle U at noon.
After the Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth, Sacramento State would score seven unanswered runs between the fifth and sixth innings to secure its second win of the season.
No hit was bigger than Morfey's second career grand slam as she crushed a 3-1 pitch over the left-center field wall to plate
Rylee Gresham,
Gwen Ludwig and
Jada Walker. That started the Hornets' scoring, as Sacramento State led for the first time (4-2) and would later add runs in the inning on RBI-singles from
Amber Rodriguez and
Alexis Parish.
The Hornets tacked on another run in the sixth after
Lexie Webb's sacrifice fly scored
Lewa Day. Morfey finished 2-for-4 with a run and four RBIs. She was one of four Hornets with multiple-hit games, including two hits apiece from Day, Walker and Parish. Sacramento State finished with 10 hits, and six of those hits came in their final two innings of at-bats.
Wahl, a transfer from Butte JC, was impressive in her Hornet debut. The 6-foot-1 right-hander allowed just six hits and two runs (one earned) in five innings of work. She walked only one batter and threw 66 pitches. Webb (1.1 ip) and
Marissa Bertuccio (0.2 ip) pitched in relief.
Seven different Hornets scored runs in today's game, including Day, Gresham, Walker, Morfey, Webb, Ludwig and
Katie Marsh.
Pacific dropped to 0-4 with the loss.
