BASEBALL'S AUSTIN ROBERTS RECIPIENT OF THE MALE HORNET AWARD

Baseball's Austin Roberts is the winner of this year's Male Hornet Award. Nominated by coaches, the honor is awarded to one male and female student-athlete that best exemplifies the spirit of a Hornet with their sportsmanship, community service and special intangibles that make them a great teammate.

Austin Roberts, Junior Pitcher
• Selected in the 8th round of the 2019 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft earlier this month
• Appeared in 22 games with nine starts this past season. Finished the year 5-4 with six saves and a 3.18 ERA.
• Struck out 84 batters in 73.2 innings, and opponents hit just .230 when he was on the mound.
• A first team all-Western Athletic Conference selection in 2018
• Three-year member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) after joining his freshman year
• Instrumental part of the Hornets' involvement with Team Impact and Yeshua "Rock" Thrower, a honorary member of the Hornets
• Roberts spent time with Rock at his treatment sessions and spoke to roughly 200 people at a dinner celebrating Rock's progression in his fight against cancer
• Worked every summer with the Hornet Baseball camps, motivated by his own experience and his younger brother to teach the love of baseball
• Worked with other teams on campus through facilities in the fall, assisting with pre- and postgame for men's and women's soccer, volleyball, and women's basketball

"Austin loves and supports this place – Sacramento State and our community – as much as any student-athlete we have had here in a long time. Nobody exemplifies this award more than Austin." - Sacramento State head baseball coach Reggie Christiansen
