SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Dr. Gloria Petruzzelli, a licensed clinical psychologist and sport psychologist, has become a member of the Sacramento State athletics department, it was announced today by Athletics Director Bill Macriss.

Entering her sixth year at Sacramento State, Petruzzelli spent five years working in the department of Student Health and Counseling Services and specializes in providing sport psychology services as well as treatment of student-athlete mental health issues.

Petruzzelli becomes the first licensed clinical psychologist and sport psychologist to be housed in an athletics department in the California State University system.

Petruzzelli has extensive experience working with NCAA Div. I student-athletes, elite athletes, and competitive age-group athletes. She is an active member of the Association of Applied Sport Psychology (AASP) and is an abstract reviewer for AASP Annual Convention. She presented at the 2014 Big Sky CSU Student-Athlete Mental Health Symposium and has been featured in Runner's World Magazine, Triathlete Magazine, Shape Magazine, Fitness.com, and peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Petruzzelli earned her doctorate degree in clinical psychology at Nova Southeastern University, and a B.S. in psychology at Eastern Michigan. She completed her year-long pre-doctoral internship with a specialization in sport psychology at the Wichita State Counseling and Testing Center, working with student-athletes. She also attended the UC Davis School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences to complete her post-doctoral clinical psychology fellowship.

Petruzzelli also regularly works with sport teams and athletes across the country through her private practice. She regularly gives talks and trainings on the topics such as performance enhancement, mindfulness and coping with injury.

Petruzzelli is also an accomplished athlete, and played competitive soccer for 18 years before transitioning to competing in triathlons and road racing. She is a competitive age-group triathlete, having finished multiple Ironman triathlons, most notably in 2014 placing fifth in her age group at Ironman Texas.
